About Our Speaker
Dr. Scott Yaruss
J. Scott Yaruss is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh with extensive experience working with children and adults who stutter in a wide variety of clinical settings. Dr. Yaruss frequently presents continuing education workshops to help speech-language pathologists feel more confident in their ability to help individuals who stutter. He is the author or coauthor of more than 130 papers, articles, chapters, or booklets on stuttering, including the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Assessment of Stuttering (OASES; Pearson Assessments), as well as School-age Stuttering Therapy: A Practical Guide and Minimizing Bullying in Children Who Stutter: A Practical Guide for SLPs (Stuttering Therapy Resources, Inc.).

Workshop Description

The purpose of this workshop is to help clinicians find real-world, practical answers to these and many other questions. Specific exercises and strategies will be discussed in detail, and participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different ways to help children who stutter overcome the difficulties associated with stuttering. Participants will come away from the workshop feeling more confident in their abilities for helping children who stutter and better able to respond to the challenges of stuttering therapy in schools and other settings.

Learner Outcomes

After attending this workshop, participants will be better equipped to:
1. Design efficient and effective diagnostic evaluations of school-age children who stutter
2. Select appropriate treatment strategies for helping children who stutter speak more easily and communicate more effectively
3. Write meaningful, objective treatment goals and benchmarks and document progress in treatment
4. Help children overcome their emotional and cognitive reactions to stuttering
5. Effectively involve families, teachers, and others in the child’s treatment plan
6. Address adverse situations such as bullying and teasing, low motivation in treatment, uncooperative parents and teachers.
